Prof. Stanisław Matwin, a distinguished researcher in artificial intelligence and machine learning, has been named a Fellow of the AGH Faculty of Computer Science. The distinction recognises his contributions to the development of AI research and his longstanding commitment to scientific collaboration and the education of young researchers at AGH University of Krakow.
Prof. Matwin’s collaboration with the artificial intelligence community at AGH began well before the establishment of the present Faculty of Computer Science. Over the years, it has included joint research, activities supporting the development of the Polish AI community, scholarly exchange, and support for PhD students and young researchers.
Prof. Matwin has maintained a longstanding collaboration with the community of the Polish Artificial Intelligence Society associated with AGH. He initiated the Society’s competition for the best doctoral dissertation in artificial intelligence in Poland and chaired its jury for many years. He has also participated in scientific seminars held at AGH and contributed to the evaluation and development of young AI researchers.
His direct collaboration with researchers who are now part of the Faculty of Computer Science has included research on the interactive exploration and visualisation of large, high-dimensional datasets. Prof. Matwin has also been actively involved in doctoral education, contributing to the development and evaluation of PhD dissertations.
The title of Fellow of the AGH Faculty of Computer Science recognises both Prof. Matwin’s scientific achievements in artificial intelligence and machine learning and his longstanding contribution to the development of the AI research community at AGH.
Stanisław Matwin is affiliated with Dalhousie University, the University of Ottawa, and the Institute of Computer Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences. His research interests include artificial intelligence, machine learning, text mining and analytics, big data, and data privacy. He has authored and co-authored more than 250 scientific publications, founded the Institute for Big Data Analytics at Dalhousie University, and is a former President of the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Association (CAIAC) and a recipient of the CAIAC Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Fellow title was presented on September 18, 2026, during Prof. Matwin’s visit to the AGH Faculty of Computer Science. On the same day, he gave an open seminar entitled “AI 2026: Where Are We and Where Are We Heading?” as part of the “Nature-Inspired Computing Methods” seminar series.
