Prof. Stanisław Matwin, a distinguished researcher in artificial intelligence and machine learning, will visit the AGH Faculty of Computer Science. The visit will provide an opportunity to meet with staff, PhD students, and students and to discuss the latest directions in the development of artificial intelligence. During his visit, Prof. Matwin will also be awarded the title of Fellow of the AGH Faculty of Computer Science. The distinction recognises his pioneering contributions to artificial intelligence and machine learning, as well as his longstanding commitment to collaboration with AGH, the development of research, scholarly exchange, and the education of young researchers.
Prof. Matwin’s collaboration with the AI community at AGH began well before the establishment of the present Faculty of Computer Science. Over the years, he has worked with researchers associated with the Polish Artificial Intelligence Society, contributed to scientific seminars and research activities at AGH, and supported the development of young AI researchers.
Prof. Matwin initiated and for many years coordinated the Polish Artificial Intelligence Society’s competition for the best doctoral dissertation in artificial intelligence in Poland. He also collaborated directly with AGH researchers on interactive exploration and visualisation of large, high-dimensional datasets and contributed to the development of doctoral research conducted at the Faculty.
Stanisław Matwin is Professor Emeritus at Dalhousie University, Distinguished University Professor at the University of Ottawa, and Professor at the Institute of Computer Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on artificial intelligence, machine learning, text mining and analytics, big data, and data privacy. He has authored and co-authored more than 250 scientific publications, founded the Institute for Big Data Analytics at Dalhousie University, and is a former President of the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Association (CAIAC). He is also a recipient of the CAIAC Lifetime Achievement Award.
Prof. Stanisław Matwin will give an open seminar entitled “AI 2026: Where Are We and Where Are We Heading?” on September 18 at 12:00, in room 1.20 at the AGH Faculty of Computer Science.
The talk will explore the current capabilities of artificial intelligence, possible sources of AI creativity, and the role of genetic algorithms. Drawing on the latest UNESCO Science Report, to which he contributed the section on artificial intelligence, Prof. Matwin will also examine AI through the lens of “creative destruction” and discuss its potential impact on the economy and the labour market.
The seminar will be held in Polish. Participation is free of charge and open to everyone interested.
