During the MinRes & LS-FEM 2026 (Mathematics & Engineering) conference, held on 27 July 2026, Professor Leszek F. Demkowicz was awarded the title of Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Computer Science at AGH University of Krakow. Professor Demkowicz is internationally recognized as one of the world's leading experts in computational mechanics, computational mathematics, and numerical methods.
The distinction was presented by Professor Aleksander Byrski, Vice-Dean for Research and Cooperation of the Faculty of Computer Science, together with Professor Maciej Paszyński.
Professor Leszek F. Demkowicz serves as Assistant Director of the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences and is a Professor at The University of Texas at Austin. His scientific achievements include more than 250 publications, seven books, and pioneering contributions to the hp-adaptive finite element method (hp-FEM) and the Discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin (DPG) methodology, both of which have significantly advanced the field of modern numerical methods.
The methods developed by Professor Demkowicz are applied across a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines, including aerospace engineering, electromagnetics, wave propagation, medical diagnostics, and high-performance computational simulations.
The nomination reviews emphasized that Professor Demkowicz's work successfully combines profound theoretical foundations with practical engineering applications, shaping the development of modern scientific computing. The reviewers also highlighted his outstanding contribution to computational mechanics and his lasting impact on the international scientific community.
As Professor Maciej Paszyński noted in his laudation, the collaboration between Professor Demkowicz and the Faculty of Computer Science at AGH has spanned more than two decades. It has resulted in, among other achievements, 22 joint scientific publications and numerous research visits by PhD students and researchers from the Faculty to the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences. Thanks to Professor Demkowicz's support, many young researchers have had the opportunity to develop their scientific careers at one of the world's leading computational science centers.
The title of Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Computer Science at AGH University of Krakow recognizes Professor Demkowicz's outstanding scientific achievements as well as his long-standing contribution to the development of scientific computing and his enduring collaboration with the Faculty of Computer Science at AGH.
