As part of the seminar series devoted to modern computational methods, we invite you to a lecture by Prof. Wojciech Bożejko from Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

The talk will focus on the application of quantum computing to solving discrete optimization problems, with particular emphasis on scheduling problems. The presentation will introduce the main approaches to quantum computing, including gate-based quantum computers and systems based on the quantum annealing phenomenon. Technologies for qubit implementation and the capabilities of contemporary quantum devices, including machines developed by D-Wave Systems, will also be discussed.

During the seminar, methods for formulating optimization problems for quantum annealing computers will be presented, including QUBO and CQM models. As a case study, the classical single-machine scheduling problem of minimizing the weighted sum of job tardiness – an NP-hard problem – will be discussed.

Wojciech Bożejko is a professor at Wrocław University of Science and Technology and the head of the Department of Automation and Quantum Computing. His research interests include discrete optimization, parallel algorithms, and the application of quantum computing to scheduling and logistics problems.

He is the author of over 260 scientific publications in the areas of optimization, parallel computing, and scheduling. He has conducted research projects funded by the Polish National Science Centre (NCN) and the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR), and has collaborated with industry, including Toyota Motor Manufacturing Europe. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (Senior Member) and the Committee on Computer Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN).

Free entry – open to all: staff, PhD students, students and external participants.
