We invite you to the next seminar in the “Nature-Inspired Computing Methods” series. Our guest will be Prof. Andras Jakab from the University of Zurich and the University Children’s Hospital Zurich, who will give a talk entitled “Machine-learning for understanding human brain development and its diseases”.

The developing human brain is an extremely complex biological system that undergoes rapid changes both before birth and during the first years of life. Studying this process raises not only new scientific questions about human development but also complex computational challenges.

Prof. Jakab and his team develop machine-learning methods for analysing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of fetuses, newborns, and children. With this type of data, conventional analysis methods must address challenges such as subject motion, rapidly changing anatomy, heterogeneous data, and the limited availability of clinical datasets.

During the seminar, Prof. Jakab will show how machine learning enables the analysis of such images, supports the development of methods that generalise better across different populations and imaging settings, and makes it possible to learn from large international datasets. He will also discuss how computational approaches can help uncover patterns of brain development and investigate their relationships with disease and subsequent clinical outcomes.

Andras Jakab is a Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zurich and a Research Group Leader at the Center for MR Research at the University Children’s Hospital Zurich – Eleonore Foundation. His research focuses on normal and abnormal human brain development and on the use of medical imaging, image analysis, and machine learning to better understand these processes. Prof. Jakab’s group works on topics including fetal and infant MRI analysis, brain development mapping, connectomics, and applications of generative AI in medical data analysis.

The seminar will be held in English.
