Temat: Why quantum computers can work at all? - decoherence and quantum error correction

Abstract:

Every implementation of a quantum computing device is necessarily imperfect and will lead to  errors in the computing process.  Similarly as in classical computing devices we need to implement error-correcting procedures to make the computation effectively error-free. In the quantum case the task is much more demanding as we need to protect quantum states against various kinds of errors and protect the precious quantum superposition that is at the heart of the quantum speed-up. It is apriori not clear whether such a task is possible at all. Fortunately, the theory of quantum error corrections [1] proves it to be possible and hence the whole idea of quantum computing is not necessarily doomed to be only a theoretical concept.
